Bernard L. Maria, M.D., M.B.A., is the Medical Director at the Children’s Medical Center and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Georgia Regents University School of Medicine.

A pediatric neurologist and neuro-oncologist with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Maria is a proven academic and scientific leader, whose contributions to children’s health are well documented in the clinic and in medical literature.

Previously, Dr. Maria spent six years as founding executive director of Medical University of South Carolina’s Charles P. Darby Children’s Research Institute, where he helped increase research funding from $9 million to $27 million annually. Additionally, he served as associate director of MUSC’s Neuroscience Institute during his time there.

Since 2001, Dr. Maria has served as annual chair of the National Institutes of Health Neurobiology of Disease in Children conferences. He is editor of “Current Management in Child Neurology”, now in its fourth edition (2009). He is senior associate editor for child neurology for Medlink Neurology and an editorial board member for Journal of Child Neurology and Pediatric Neurology. He is a co-editor of the 2006 and 2010 editions of “Textbook for Child Neurology” by John H. Menkes.

Dr. Maria is a member of the Finance Committee of the Child Neurology Society, was a member of the society’s Scientific Selection Committee from 1999-02 and a founding member of the CNS Education and Research Foundation in 2000. He is a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

He received the International Research Advocacy Award from the Joubert Syndrome Foundation in 2002 and 2004 and is a member of the Scientific Committee and Professional Advisory Board of the foundation which provides education and support to health care professionals and families regarding the rare genetic disorder affecting balance and coordination.

A native Canadian, he earned his medical degree from the Université de Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada, and completed his pediatric training at The Montreal Children’s Hospital, McGill University. He completed pediatric neurology training, including a year as chief resident, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital of Johns Hopkins University. He completed a neuro-oncology fellowship at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Maria is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Neurology. He is recognized for his passion in education and mentoring.

Dr. Maria has been regularly included in “Best Doctors in America” and the Marquis Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.
